Acts 14
1 Now it came to pass in Iconium, that they
entered together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spoke (the
same message), that a great multitude of both the Jews and also the Greeks believed.
2 But the unbelieving Jews stirred up and
poisoned the minds of the Gentiles against the brethren (of
believers).
3 Therefore, they stayed a long time speaking
boldly in the Lord, which gave testimony to the word of His grace, and (He)
granted signs and wonders to be done by their hands.
4 But the multitude of the city was divided:
and some (sided with) with the Jews, and some with the apostles.
5 And when there was an assault made by both
the Gentiles and also the Jews (along) with their rulers, to deliberately injure
them, and to stone them,
6 When they had seen it, they fled to Lystra and Derbe, cities of Lycaonia,
and to the region that lies around it:
7 And there they preached the gospel.
8 And in Lystra a certain man was sitting, crippled in the feet, lame from
his mother's womb, who had never walked:
9 The man listened to Paul speak: who was steadfastly beholding him, and
perceiving that he had faith to be healed,
10 Saying with a loud voice, Stand upright on your feet. And the man leaped
and walked.
11 And when the people saw what Paul had done, they raised their voices,
saying in the language of Lycaonia, The gods have come down to us in the
likeness of men.
12 And they called Barnabas, Zeus; and Paul, Hermes, because he was the
chief speaker.
13 Then the priest of Zeus, who was just outside their city, brought oxen
and wreaths to the gates, with the people desiring a sacrifice.
14 When the apostles, Barnabas and Paul, heard
of this, they rent their clothes (as
a sign of their extreme displeasure and sorrow), and ran out among the people, crying out,
15 And saying, Sirs, why do you do these
things? We also are men of like passions (human in
nature)
like you, and preach to you that you should turn from these vain things (void
of any power) to the living God, who made the heaven, and earth, and the sea, and
all things that are therein:
16 Who in the generations past allowed all nations to walk in their own
ways.
17 Nevertheless, he has not left Himself
without witness, (but
testified)
in that He did good, and gave us rain from heaven, and fruitful seasons,
filling our hearts with food and joy.
18 And with these sayings, they barely stopped the people from sacrificing
to them.
19 And there came from Antioch and Iconium
certain Jews, who persuaded the people (against
them),
and having stoned Paul, dragged him out of the city, supposing he was dead.
20 However, as the disciples stood around him,
he got up and came (back) into the city: and the next day he departed
with Barnabas to Derbe.
21 And when they had preached the gospel to that city, and had taught many,
they returned again to Lystra, and to Iconium, and Antioch,
22 To establish and strengthen the souls of the
disciples, exhorting them to continue (to abide)
in the faith (of
the Lord Jesus), and so that (after
we have endured)
through many tribulations
we must
enter the
kingdom of God.
23 And when they had (chosen
and)
ordained elders for them in every church, and had prayed with fasting, they
entrusted them to the Lord, on whom they believed.
24 And after they had passed through Pisidia, they came to Pamphylia.
25 And when they had preached the word in Perga, they went down into
Attalia:
26 And there sailed to Antioch, from where they
had been recommended to the grace of God for the work which they (had
now)
fulfilled.
27 And when they were come, and had gathered the church together, they
reported all that God had done with them, and how he had opened the door of
faith to the Gentiles.
28 And there they stayed a long time with the disciples.
