Luke 4

 

1 And Jesus, being (both fully God and fully man, began His ministry) full of the Holy Ghost, returning from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,

 

2 Being tempted forty days (to prove He was the Son) by the devil. And in those days, He did not eat anything: and when those days were ended, afterward He was hungry.

 

3 And the devil said to Him, If you are the Son of God, command this stone that it be made into bread (appealing to the hunger in Jesus’ flesh, to the lust of the flesh).

 

4 And Jesus (who was the very Word of God incarnate in flesh) answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread (which perishes) alone, but by every word (that proceeds from the mouth) of God (this is the bread of life that is able to satisfy the desire of a man’s heart).

 

5 And the devil, taking Him up into a high mountain, showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time (appealing to the lust of the eyes and what looks good for food unto life).

 

6 And the devil said to Him, All this power (I have obtained) will I give you, and the glory that comes from them: for that is delivered to me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.

 

7 If you therefore will worship (by esteeming) me (and my way unto life), all of it shall be yours.

 

8 And Jesus answered and said to him, Get behind Me, Satan! for it is written: You shall worship (revering and esteeming no one other than) the Lord your God, and Him only shall you (enlist to) serve (you for He alone is sufficient and fully equipped to give the endless life your heart truly desires).

 

9 And he brought Him to Jerusalem, and set Him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, If you are the Son of God, cast yourself down from here (appealing to the pride of life):

 

10 For it is written, He shall give His angels charge over you, to keep you:

 

11 And in their hands they shall bear you up, lest at any time you dash your foot against a stone (tempting Jesus to take up the care for His own life, which care He committed to the Father).

 

12 And Jesus answering said to him, It is said, You shall not tempt the Lord your God (to prove, is the Lord with me, or not?).

 

13 And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from Him until a (more) opportune time.

 

14 And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a report about Him throughout all the surrounding regions.

 

15 And He taught in their synagogues, (His teachings) being glorified (and magnified) by all.

 

16 And He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up: and, as was His custom, He went into the synagogue on the sabbath day and stood up to read.

 

17 And there was delivered to Him the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written,

 

18 The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because He has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor (in spirit, to those who see they have no ability to serve themselves with an endless life); He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovery of sight to the blind (so that they might see that God is not the one who condemns them but their loving Father who only wants to be good to them and serve them with His life), to set at liberty them that are (beaten) bruised (and molested by the death and corruption in the world),

 

19 To preach the acceptable year of the Lord (where the opening of liberty is declared and all debts erased).

 

20 And He closed the book, and He gave it again to the minister, and sat down (in the seat of authority). And the eyes of all of them that were in the synagogue were fastened on Him.

 

21 And He began to say to them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears (declaring Himself as its fulfillment).

 

22 And all bore him witness and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of His mouth. And they said, Is this not Joseph's (the carpenter's) son?

 

23 And He said to them, You will surely say to Me this proverb, Physician, heal yourself (which some did say while He was on the cross, He saved others, let Him save Himself): whatever we have heard done in Capernaum, do also here in your country.

 

24 And He said, Truly I say to you, No prophet is accepted in His own country (much less his hometown).

 

25 But I tell you the truth, many widows were in Israel in the days of Elijah, when the heaven was shut up three years and six months, when a great famine was throughout all the land;

 

26 But to none of them was Elijah sent, except to Sarepta, a city of Sidon, to a (Gentile) woman who was a widow.

 

27 And there were many lepers in Israel at the time of Elisha the prophet; and none of them was cleansed, except Naaman the Syrian (also a Gentile).

 

28 And all those in the synagogue, when they heard these things, were filled with anger,

 

29 And rose up and drove Him out of the city and led Him to the edge of the hill upon which their city was built, so that they might throw him down headfirst.

 

30 But He passed through the middle of them and went His way,

 

31 And came down to Capernaum, a city of Galilee, and taught them on the sabbath days.

 

32 And they were astonished at His doctrine: for His word carried with it power (and He spoke as One with authority).

 

33 And in the synagogue, there was a man who had a spirit of an unclean demon, and cried out with a loud voice,

 

34 Saying (in fear), Let us alone! What do you want with us, you Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us (the demonic spirits)? I know who you are; the Holy One of God.

 

35 And Jesus rebuked him, saying, Silence! Come out of him. And when the demon had thrown him in the middle (of them), he came out of him and did not harm him.

 

36 And they were all amazed, and spoke among themselves, saying, What type of word is this! For with authority and power (that can only come from God), He commands the unclean spirits, and they come out.

 

37 And His fame spread to every place in the surrounding region.

 

38 And He went out from the synagogue and entered into Simon's house. And Simon's mother-in-law was taken with a great fever, and they sought Him for her.

 

39 And He stood over her and rebuked the fever; and it left her: and immediately she got up and ministered to them.

 

40 Now when the sun was setting, all those who had any sick with various diseases brought them to Him; and He laid His hands on every one of them and healed them.

 

41 And demons also came out of many, crying out, and saying, You are Christ the Son of God. And He rebuked them, not allowing them to speak: for they knew that He was the Christ.

 

42 And when it was daytime, He departed and went into a desert place: and the people sought Him, and came to Him, and detained Him, that He should not depart from them.

 

43 And He said to them, I must preach the kingdom of God to other cities also: for this reason, am I sent.

 

44 And He preached in the synagogues of Galilee.
