Acts 18
1 After these things, Paul departed from Athens and came to Corinth;
2 And found a certain Jew named Aquila, born in
Pontus, recently come from Italy, with his wife Priscilla; {because Claudius
had commanded all Jews to depart from Rome:} and (he)
came to them.
3 And because he was of the same trade, he
stayed with them and worked: because they were (both)
tentmakers by trade.
4 And he reasoned in the synagogue every
sabbath and persuaded (both) the Jews and the Greeks.
5 And when Silas and Timothy had come from
Macedonia, Paul was fully absorbed in (preaching)
the word and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ (the Word
made flesh).
6 And when they opposed and slandered (him),
he shook off his garment, and said to them, Your blood is on your own heads;
I am clean; (since
you judge yourself unworthy of eternal life) from now on I will go to the Gentiles.
7 And he departed from there, and entered into a certain man's house, named
Justus, one who worshipped God, whose house adjoined to the synagogue.
8 And Crispus, the chief ruler of the
synagogue, believed on the Lord (Jesus) with all his house; and many of the
Corinthians hearing (that
Jesus was indeed the Christ)
believed, and were baptized.
9 Then the Lord spoke to Paul in the night by a
vision, Do not be afraid, but speak (boldly),
and do not hold your peace:
10 For I am (ever)
with you, and no man shall lay a hand on you to hurt you: for I have many
people in this city.
11 And he continued there a year and six months, teaching the word of God
among them.
12 And when Gallio was the deputy of Achaia, the Jews rose up with one
accord against Paul, and brought him to the judgment seat,
13 Saying, This man persuades men to worship
God contrary to the law (of
Moses).
14 And now, when Paul was about to open his
mouth, Gallio said to the Jews, If it were a matter of (some)
wrong (doing)
or wicked crime, O you Jews, it would be reasonable that I should put up
with you:
15 But if it is a question of words and names,
and regarding your law, you look to it (yourselves);
for I will not be the judge of such matters.
16 And he sent them away from the judgment seat.
17 And they all took hold of Sosthenes, the chief ruler of the synagogue,
and beat him before the judgment seat. And Gallio had no concern for any of
those things.
18 And Paul stayed there yet a good while after this, and then took leave of
the brethren, and sailed from there into Syria, and with him, Priscilla and
Aquila; having shaved his head in Cenchrea: for he had made a vow.
19 And he came to Ephesus and left them there: but he himself went into the
synagogue and reasoned with the Jews.
20 When they wanted him to stay a longer time with them, he did not agree to
it;
21 But bidding them farewell, saying, I must by all means keep this feast
that is coming in Jerusalem: but I will return again to you, God willing.
And he sailed from Ephesus.
22 And when he landed at Caesarea, and went up, and greeted the church, he
went down to Antioch.
23 And after he had spent some time there, he
departed and went over all the regions of Galatia and Phrygia in that order,
strengthening (and
exhorting)
all the disciples (there to continue in the faith).
24 And a certain Jew named Apollos, born at
Alexandria, an eloquent (well
spoken) man, and mighty in the scriptures, came to
Ephesus.
25 This man was instructed in the way of the
Lord, and having a burning passion in the spirit, he spoke and taught the
things of the Lord (Jesus) diligently, knowing only the baptism of John.
26 And he began to speak boldly in the
synagogue: whom, when Aquila and Priscilla had heard, they took him (aside)
and expounded to him (the faith of the Lord Jesus explaining) the way of God more perfectly.
27 And when he desired to pass into Achaia, the brethren wrote, exhorting
the disciples there to receive him: who, when he had come, greatly helped
those who had come to believe through grace:
28 For he powerfully refuted the Jews publicly,
showing by the scriptures that Jesus was Christ (The
Word made flesh).
