Acts 20
1 And after the uproar had ended, Paul called to him the disciples, and
embraced them, and departed to go into Macedonia.
2 And when he had passed over those parts and had given them much
encouragement, he came into Greece,
3 And there stayed three months. And when the Jews had made a plot against
him, as he was about to sail into Syria, he purposed to return through
Macedonia.
4 And accompanying him to Asia were Sopater of Berea, and of the
Thessalonians, Aristarchus and Secundus; and Gaius of Derbe, and Timothy;
and of Asia, Tychicus and Trophimus.
5 These, having gone before, waited for us at Troas.
6 And we sailed away from Philippi after the days of unleavened bread and
came to them in Troas after five days, where we stayed seven days.
7 And on the first day of the week, when the
disciples came together to break bread (as was
their custom),
Paul preached to them, ready to depart on the next day; and continued his
speech until midnight.
8 And there were many lights in the upper room, where they were gathered
together.
9 And there sat in a window a certain young man named Eutychus, having
fallen into a deep sleep: and as Paul preached longer, he was overcome with
sleep, and fell down from the third loft, and was taken up dead.
10 And Paul went down, and fell on him, and
embracing him said, Do not be alarmed, for his life is (still)
in him.
11 When he therefore had come up again, and had broken bread, and eaten, and
talked a while longer, even till break of day, so he departed.
12 And they brought the young man alive and were more than a little
comforted.
13 And we went ahead to the ship, and sailed to Assos, there intending to
take Paul aboard: but he had arranged for himself to go on foot.
14 And when he met with us at Assos, we took him aboard and came to
Mitylene.
15 And we sailed there and came over the next day over against Chios; and
the next day we arrived at Samos, and stayed at Trogyllium; and the next day
we came to Miletus.
16 For Paul had determined to sail by Ephesus, because he would not spend
the time in Asia: for he hurried, as if it were possible for him, to be at
Jerusalem the day of Pentecost.
17 And from Miletus, he sent to Ephesus and called the elders of the church.
18 And when they had come to him, he said to them, You know, from the first
day that I came into Asia, after what way I lived among you the entire time,
19 Serving the LORD with all humility of mind,
and with many tears, and temptations, which befell me by the plot of the
Jews (against
me):
20 And how I kept back nothing that was
profitable to you (in
the gospel),
but have showed you (all things), and have taught you publicly, and from house to house,
21 Testifying both to the Jews and also to the
Greeks, repentance (from
our own way)
toward God, and faith toward our Lord Jesus Christ.
22 And now, behold, I go bound in the Spirit to Jerusalem, not knowing the
things that shall happen to me there:
23 Except that the Holy Ghost has testified to me in every city, saying that
bonds and tribulations await me.
24 But none of these things move me (from
the mark for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ),
neither do I consider my life (in
the world)
dear to me (to
preserve it), (but) so that I might finish my course with joy,
and the ministry, which I have received from the Lord Jesus, to (fully)
testify the gospel of the grace of God.
25 And now, behold, I know that all of you,
among whom I have gone (house
to house),
preaching the kingdom of God, will not see my face any longer.
26 Therefore, I testify to you this day that I am innocent of the blood of
all men.
27 For I have not shrunk back from declaring to
you all the (full) counsel of God (which is in
the testimony of Jesus Christ).
28 Take heed therefore to (examine)
yourselves (that
you be in the faith), and (declare
it) to all the flock, over which the Holy Ghost
has made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which God Himself has
purchased with (the
shedding of)
His own (precious)
blood.
29 For I know this, that after my departure,
grievous wolves (who
do not care about the lives of the sheep)
shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock (from
heavy burdens and erroneous doctrines).
30 And from among your own selves (and
not just strangers) shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away disciples
after themselves.
31 Wherefore (you ought
to)
watch, and remember, that during the time of three years (I was with
you)
I did not cease to warn everyone night and day with tears.
32 And now, brethren, I commit you to God, and
to the word of His grace, which is able to build you up, and to give you an
inheritance among all them which are sanctified (from death).
33 I have not lusted after any man's silver, or gold, or apparel.
34 You yourselves know that these hands ministered to my own needs, and to
those that were with me.
35 I have shown you all things (by
example), how that so laboring you ought to support the weak, and to remember
the words of the Lord Jesus, how he said, It is more blessed to give than to
receive.
36 And after he had so spoken, he kneeled down and prayed with them all.
37 And they all wept excessively, and fell on Paul's neck, and kissed him,
38 Being most sorrowful for the words which he spoke, that they should not
see his face anymore. And they accompanied him to the ship.
