Mark 7

 

1 Then came together unto Him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

 

2 And when they saw some of His disciples eating bread with defiled hands, that is to say with unwashed hands, they found fault.

 

3 For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, unless they carefully wash their hands, do not eat, keeping the tradition of the elders.

 

4 And when they come from the market, unless they wash, they do not eat. And many other things there are, which they have received (from the elders) to keep, like the washing of cups, and pots, brazen vessels, and of tables.

 

5 Then the Pharisees and scribes asked Him, Why do your disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashed hands?

 

6 He answered and said to them, Rightfully has Isaiah prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, These people honor Me with their lips, but their heart is far from Me.

 

7 However, in vain do they worship Me, teaching as doctrines the precepts of men (which have no benefit unto eternal life).

 

8 For laying aside (having no reverence for) the commandment of God (and the recompense of reward), you keep (esteeming) the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things you do.

 

9 And He said to them, Full well (thinking yourself to be clever) do you reject the commandment of God, so that you may (establish and) keep your own tradition.

 

10 For Moses said, Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever curses (speaking evil of) father or mother, let him die the death:

 

11 But you say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, Whatever you might have profited from me, it is Corban, which is to say, a gift (an offering given to God; he shall be free from obligation).

 

12 And (by this) you no longer allow him to do as he should for his father or his mother;

 

13 Making the word of God of no effect through your tradition, which you (received from your fathers and) have delivered (to your disciples): and many things like this do you do.

 

14 And when He had called all the people to Him, He said to them, Hearken diligently to Me every one of you, and understand:

 

15 There is nothing from outside of a man that entering into him (into his mouth) can defile him: but the things which come out of him (from out of his heart), those are the things that defile the man.

 

16 If any man has ears to hear, let him hear.

 

17 And when He had entered into the house (away) from the people, His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.

 

18 And He said to them, Are you also without understanding? Do you not perceive that whatever thing from outside enters into the man (with unwashed hands); it cannot defile him;

 

19 Because it does not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and comes out of his body, purging all foods (from the body)?

 

20 And He said, That which comes out of the man is that which defiles the man.

 

21 Because from within, out of the heart of men (who lay aside the commandment of God and make flesh their arm), proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

 

22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

 

23 All these evil things come from within (the heart) and defile the man.

 

24 And from there He arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into a house, and desired that no man would know it: but He could not be hidden.

 

25 For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of Him, and came and fell at His feet:

 

26 The woman was a Greek (Gentile), a Syrophenician by nation; and she kept after Him (asking) that He would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

 

27 But Jesus said to her, Permit the children first to be filled: for it is not good to take the children's bread, and to cast it to the dogs (until after the children have eaten and are satisfied).

 

28 And she answered and said to Him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the (masters') table eat of the children's crumbs.

 

29 And He said to her, (O woman) for this saying (be it unto you as you have said), go on your way; the devil has gone out of your daughter.

 

30 And when she came to her house, she found the devil had gone out, and her daughter lay on the bed.

 

31 And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, He came to the sea of Galilee, through the middle of the coasts of Decapolis.

 

32 And they brought to Him one who was deaf and had an impediment in his speech; and they begged Him to put His hand on him.

 

33 And He took him aside from the multitude, and put His fingers into his ears, and He spit, and touched his tongue;

 

34 And looking up to heaven, He sighed, and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

 

35 And straightaway his ears were opened, and the impediment (which bound) his tongue was loose, and he spoke clearly.

 

36 And He instructed them that they should tell no man: but the more He charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

 

37 And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He has done all things well: He makes both the deaf to hear, and the mute to speak.
