Mark 8

 

1 In those days the crowd being very great, and having nothing to eat, Jesus called His disciples to Him, and said to them,

 

2 I have compassion on the crowd, because they have now been with Me three days, and have nothing to eat:

 

3 And if I send them away hungry to their own houses, they will faint along the way: for some of them came from far.

 

4 And His disciples answered Him, From where can a man satisfy this many men with bread here in the wilderness?

 

5 And He asked them, How many loaves (of bread) do you have? And they said, Seven.

 

6 And He instructed the people to sit down on the ground: and He took the seven loaves, and gave thanks, and broke, and gave to His disciples to set before them; and they did set them before the people.

 

7 And they had a few small fishes: and he blessed and instructed them to also set before them.

 

8 So they did eat and were filled (and satisfied): and they took up from the broken fragments that were left seven baskets (full).

 

9 And they that had eaten were about four thousand: and He sent them away (to their homes).

 

10 And straightaway He entered into a ship with His disciples and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

 

11 And the Pharisees came out, and began to dispute with Him, seeking of Him a sign from heaven, tempting Him.

 

12 And He sighed deeply in His spirit, and said, Why does this (adulterous) generation seek after a sign? Truly I say to you, No sign shall be given to this generation (of vipers, fathered by the serpent).

 

13 And He left them, and entering into the ship again departed to the other side.

 

14 Now the disciples had forgotten to take bread, neither did they have in the ship with them more than one loaf.

 

15 And He charged them, saying, Watch carefully (so that you might see and discern), beware of the leaven (the doctrines) of the Pharisees, and of the leaven of Herod.

 

16 And they reasoned among themselves, saying, It is because we have no bread.

 

17 And when Jesus knew it, He said to them, Why do you reason (among yourselves), because you have no bread? Do you not yet perceive (who I am), nor understand (that only God can do these things)? Have your hearts (also been) hardened (like that of the scribes and Pharisees)?

 

18 Having eyes, do you not see, and having ears, do you not hear, and do you not remember?

 

19 When I broke the five loaves among five thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? They say to Him, Twelve.

 

20 And when the seven among four thousand, how many baskets full of fragments did you take up? And they said, Seven.

 

21 And He said to them, How is it that you do not understand?

 

22 And He came to Bethsaida; and they brought a blind man to Him and wanted Him to touch him.

 

23 And He took the blind man by the hand and led him out of the town; and when He had spit on his eyes, and put His hands on him, He asked him if he saw anything.

 

24 And he looked up, and said, I see men as trees, walking.

 

25 After that He put his hands again on his eyes and made him look up: and he was restored and saw every man clearly.

 

26 And He sent him away to his house, saying, Do not go into the town, nor tell it to any in the town.

 

27 And Jesus went out, and His disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and on the way He asked His disciples, saying to them, Whom do men say that I am?

 

28 And they answered, John the Baptist; but some say, Elijah; and others, One of the prophets.

 

29 And He said to them, But whom do you say that I am? And Peter answered and said to Him, You are the Christ (the eternally begotten Son of the living God).

 

30 And He charged them that they should tell no man of Him.

 

31 And He began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and by the chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

 

32 And He spoke that saying openly. And Peter took Him (aside) and began to rebuke Him.

 

33 But when Jesus had turned about and looked on His disciples, He rebuked Peter (and the words at the source), saying, Get behind Me, Satan: for you do not mind the things that are (of the Spirit) of God, but the things that are (from the lust) of men.

 

34 And when He had called the people to Him (along) with His disciples also, He said to them, Whoever desires to come after Me (and the endless life I will serve them), let him deny (the life he can serve) himself, and take up his cross (in this world), and follow Me.

 

35 For whoever desires to preserve his (own perishable) life (in the world) shall lose it; but whoever shall lose his life (that the world can give him) for My sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it (unto everlasting life and bodily immortality on death's last day in the earth).

 

36 For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose (forfeiting) his own soul (which shall perish)?

 

37 Or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul? (nothing but thanksgiving to the One who can preserve it with His divinity)

 

38 Whoever therefore shall be ashamed of Me and of My words in this adulterous and sinful generation (that runs after other gods and worships the works of their own hands in vain, not seeing Me or My Words as the power of God unto salvation); he also (who did not trust in) the (faith and words of) Son of man shall be ashamed, when He (the Lord Jesus) comes in the glory of His Father with the holy angels (on the last day of death in the earth).
