Romans 2
1 Therefore, you are without excuse, O (vain)
man, whoever you are that judge: for in (the same things) which you
judge another, you condemn yourself (in your own heart), because you
that judge do the same things.
2 But we are sure that the judgment of God (revealed
from heaven) is according to truth (taking vengeance) upon (the
death and unrighteousness in) them which do such things.
3 And do you think this, O (vain) man, who
judge them which do such things (under the sway of death), and (yet
you who) do the same (being animated by the same death), that you
shall escape the judgment of God?
4 Or do you despise the riches of (the mercies of
God) His kindness and forbearance and long-suffering (to conform you
into His image, so that you might partake of His likeness); not knowing
that it is the goodness (kindness and mercy) of God that leads you to
repentance?
5 But because of the hardness and unrepentance of
your heart (to see God’s mercy toward you), your judgment stores up
to yourself wrath against (yourself to condemn you in) the day of
wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God;
6 Who will render to every man (Jew or Gentile)
according to the deeds (of their own heart, whether according to the
flesh unto corruption or the Spirit unto life):
7 To those who (rest from their own work), (but
receive the strength to endure) with patience by continuing in well
doing, seeking for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life (looking
to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ):
8 But to them that are contentious (standing
opposed to the mercy and judgment of God unto life and immortality), and
do not obey the truth (revealed in Christ and Him crucified to the world
and the world to them), but obey (the will of the flesh unto)
unrighteousness, indignation, and wrath,
9 Tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man that
does evil (by continuing in labors and hardships to establish their own
corruptible lives), to the Jew first, and also of the Gentile;
10 But glory, honor, (mercy) and peace to
every man that works good (by looking to the faith of Jesus Christ),
to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile:
11 For there is no respect of persons with God.
12 For as many as have sinned (rejecting the
mercy of God) without law shall also perish without law: and as many as
have sinned (rejecting the mercy of God contained) in the law shall
be judged by the law (written on their heart);
13 {For it is not the hearers of the law who are
just before God, but the doers of the law who (continue looking to the
One who promised His life to obtain mercy) shall be justified.
14 For when the Gentiles, who do not have the law,
do by nature the things contained in the law, these, who do not have the
law, are (making) a law to themselves:
15 Which reveals the work of the law written in
their hearts, their conscience also bearing witness, and their thoughts all
the while (judging), accusing or else excusing one another;}
16 In the day when God shall judge the secrets of
men (hearts) by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.
17 But if you are called a Jew, and rest (relying)
upon the law, and make your boast in God (alone),
18 And know His will, and approve the (genuine)
things (of Him) that are more excellent, being instructed out of the
law;
19 And are confident that you yourself are a guide
to the blind, a light to those who are in darkness,
20 An instructor of the foolish, a teacher of babes,
who possesses the form of knowledge and of the truth in the law.
21 Therefore, you who teach another, do you not
teach yourself? you that preach a man should not steal, do you steal?
22 You that say a man should not commit adultery, do
you commit adultery? you that detest idols, do you defile yourself with
other gods?
23 You that make your boast in the law, through your
transgression of the law, do you dishonor God?
24 For (by these things) the name of God is
slandered among the Gentiles by you, as it is written.
25 For circumcision truly (only) profits, if
you keep the law (through faith toward God and not reliance upon the
flesh): but if you be a transgressor of the law (through the weakness
of your dying flesh), your circumcision is made uncircumcision.
26 Therefore, if the uncircumcision observes the
righteousness of the law (with faith toward God in his heart), shall
not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision?
27 And shall not (their) uncircumcision,
which is by nature, if it fulfills (the spirit of) the law, judge
you, who by the letter and circumcision do transgress the law?
28 For one is not a Jew, who is one outwardly (in
the flesh); neither is that (true) circumcision, which is outward
in the flesh (but in the heart):
29 But one is a Jew, who is one inwardly (in his
heart); and (true) circumcision is that of the heart, in the
spirit, and not in the letter (through the flesh); whose praise is
not in (the strength of) men, but in (the power of) God.
